Baptism of the Holy Ghost
Baptism of the Holy Ghost
There is a lot of controversies concerning the Baptism of the Holy Ghost as to whether it is for us today. Some teach that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit was just for the early church as took place on the day of Pentecost. Others teach the baptism takes place when a person comes into salvation; others teach it is a separate experience from salvation and is for the believer today with the initial evidence of speaking in “tongues” as the Spirit gives utterance. I have covered the scriptures concerning the Holy Ghost Baptism and will let the Scriptures speak for it self. You can draw your own conclusion.
John the Baptist
We start with the message John the Baptist was preaching concerning the coming of the promised Messiah Jesus Christ. In Mathew chapter 3 starting at verse eleven John the Baptist said;
11. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he (Jesus) that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: HE SHALL BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY GHOST, and with fire:
13. Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him .
14. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15. And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17. And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Mark 1 verse 8 says;
"I indeed have baptized you with water: but he (Jesus) SHALL BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY GHOST".
John 1 starting at verse 33 says;
"And I (John) knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, THE SAME IS HE WHICH BAPTIZETH WITH THE HOLY GHOST.
34. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
We have plainly seen in the above scriptures that it is JESUS that BAPTIZES THE BELIVER WITH THE HOLY GHOST. This manifestation can only be brought about by and through the Spirit of God as we give our life to Christ Jesus.
Matthew 4 starting at verse one says;
"Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights,…..”
After fasting and praying what did Jesus do and what was His spiritual state? The answer is in the following verses.
Luke 4 starting at verse 14 says;
"And JESUS RETURNED IN THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
15. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
16. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
17. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
18. The SPIRIT of the Lord is upon me, because he hath ANOINTED me to PREACH the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to HEAL the brokenhearted, to PREACH DELIVERANCE to the captives, and RECOVERING of SIGHT to the BLIND, to set at LIBERTY them that are BRUSIDE,
19. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
20. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
Acts 10:
38. How God ANOINTED JESUS of Nazareth WITH THE HOLY GHOST AND WITH POWER: who went about DOING GOOD, and HEALING ALL that were OPPRESSED OF THE DEVIL; for God was with him.
In the above scriptures we can plainly see that AFTER the Holy Spirit rested upon Jesus is when He began His ministry in bring life, healing and deliverance to the multitudes. Jesus did no miracle until He was first ANOINTED by the Holy Ghost to perform His earthly ministry and was led by the Spirit. If Jesus as a man needed to rely on the anointing of the Spirit so do we in following Jesus’ Him being our example. We are not greater then our Lord.
John 7 starting at verse 37 says;
"In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, IF ANY MAN THRIST, let him come unto me, and drink.
38. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, OUT OF HIS BELLY SHALL FLOW RIVERS OF LIVING WATER.
39. (But this spake he (Jesus) OF THE SPIRIT, which they that believe on him should RECIVE; for the HOLY GHOST WAS NOT YET GIVEN; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
During the life and ministry of Jesus’ and His disciples the Holy Spirit MOVED UPON the 12 and also upon the 70 that Jesus appointed to preach His Word and to heal the sick AS DID THE PROPHETS OF OLD as the Spirit of God moved upon them to PREACH, PRPHECY and perform MIRICALS. The Holy Spirit under the OLD COVENENT was NOT poured out on ALL FLESH till AFTER Jesus death and resurrection in bring in the NEW COVENENT.
John 14: says;

12. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
13. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
15. If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you ANOTHER COMFORTER, that he may abide with you for ever;
17. Even the SPIRIT OF TRUTH; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he DWELLETH WITH YOU, and SHALL BE IN YOU.
26. But the COMFORTER, which is the HOLY GHOST, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall TEACH YOU ALL THINGS, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Here we can see that Jesus’ was sending ANOTHER COMFORTER, the HOLY GHOST the Spirit of truth upon His departure from planet Earth. He told His disciples… “for he DWELLETH WITH YOU, and SHALL BE IN YOU. The works Jesus did we can do also for so has our Lord stated.
It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away.
John 16: says;
5. But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
6. But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9. Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10. Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11. Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13. Howbeit when he, the SPIRIT of TRUTH, is come, he will GUIDE you into ALL TRUTH: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will SHEW YOU THINGS TO COME.
14. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
16. A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
Jesus said it was “expedient” (useful, helpful, a plan) for Him to depart. The Comforter will not come unto you; but if I (Jesus) depart, I will send him unto you. God’s plan for His church was to have them FILLED with the SPIRIT, FAITH and POWER to PREACH HIS WORD and bring HEALING and DELIVERANCE to MULTITUDES. Thus with SIGNS FOLLOWING according to Mark chapter 16.
Jesus Ascends or taken up to Heaven
Acts 1 starting at verse one says;
1. The former treatise have I made, O The-oph-il-us, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
2. Until the day in which he (Jesus) was taken up, AFTER that he through the HOLY GHOST had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
3. To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
4. And, being assembled together with them, COMMANDED them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but WAIT for the PROMISE of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5. For John truly baptized with water; BUT YE SHALL BE BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY GHOST not many days hence.
8. BUT YE SHALL RECEIVE POWER, AFTER that the HOLY GHOST is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
9. And when he (Jesus) had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. ……”
12. (Then returned they unto Jerusalem) from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
13. (And when they were come in, they went up into an UPPER ROOM), where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
14. (These ALL CONTINUED with one accord in PRAYER) and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
In there obedience to the Lord a 120 gathered in the upper room in prayer waiting for the PROMISE of the Father to be given, the out pouring of the HOLY GHOST which would bring POWER to carry on the ministry of Jesus and doing the works He did with Signs Following.
The day of Pentecost
Acts 2: starting at verse one says;
"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were ALL with one accord in one place.
2. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3. And there APPEARED unto them CLOVEN TONGUES like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4. And they were ALL FILLED with the HOLY GHOST, and began to speak WITH OTHER TONGUES, as the SPIRIT GAVE THEM UTTERANCE.
5. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven…………… "
12. And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
13. Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
14. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
15. For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
Acts 2 continued.

16. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
17. And it shall come to pass IN THE LAST DAYS, saith God, I WILL POUR OUT of my SPIRIT upon ALL FLESH: and your sons and your daughters SHALL PRPPHECY and your young men SHALL SEE VISIONS, and your old men SHALL DREAM DREAMS:
18. And on my servants and on my handmaidens I WILL POUR OUT IN THOSE DAYS OF MY SPIRIT; AND THEY SHALL PROPHECY........
